HIGH-PERFORMANCE SCHOOLS: Single school system is best

I VIEW with apprehension the negative comments by several non-governmental organisations and individuals regarding the high-performance schools (HPS) announced recently.
Even though they are entitled to their opinion, they should have been more mature in their approach to this new development. The fact that all the selected schools are national schools is central to their unhappiness.
To question the choice of the 20 schools by comparing them with vernacular schools smacks of racism. It is sad that even as adults we are unable to rid ourselves of this prejudice.
We look at this issue as a case of national schools versus others. This is very unfortunate because we fail to see that these schools belong to all Malaysians.
On hindsight, I understand why they reacted the way they did. We designed our education system in such a way that every child goes to the school catering to a certain race only. We proudly call it freedom of choice and unity in diversity.
But the truth is, it is this practice that is dividing us now and will divide our children in the future.
As much as I appreciate the arduous task of the authorities in selecting the HPS, I am afraid that I have to disagree with the initiative.
By coming up with a new school group, we not only fail to address the existing problems in our education system, but also give ammunition to the cynics among us and cause confusion for the public.
The government will be accused of being insincere in its endeavours, let alone staying focused to see through its long-term plans. New education concepts seem to crop up whenever there is someone new in charge. Earlier, it was vision schools. This was followed by cluster schools. Now, we have the HPS. Who monitors and what happens to the earlier two groups of schools?
I think the authorities should instead utilise their energy and resources to introduce a single school system. There will definitely be similar objections to contend with, but at least we know it is in the best interests of future generations.

MELAKA (Bernama) - Kementerian Perdagangan Antarabangsa dan Industri (MITI) akan mempertimbangkan permintaan untuk membina sebuah makmal pemeriksaan lengkap bagi produk makanan dan herba bagi tujuan persijilan komprehensif sebelum dieksport ke luar negara. Timbalan Menterinya Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir berkata pada masa ini pengeksport produk makanan dan herba menggunakan kemudahan makmal di Singapura bagi tujuan persijilan sebelum dieksport terutama bagi pasaran Kesatuan Eropah (EU). "Produk makanan dan herba negara ini yang telah menerima pengesahan dan persijilan di Singapura, akan diterima mudah memasuki pasaran EU, walaupun sebenarnya ia berasal dari Malaysia," katanya kepada pemberita selepas merasmikan majlis bersama Usahawan dan Pengeksport yang dianjurkan oleh Perbadanan Pembangunan Perdagangan Luar (MATRADE) di sini Khamis.

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - Sebarang cadangan untuk memantapkan lagi model ekonomi negara yang baharu perlu dikemukakan secepat mungkin kepada Majlis Penasihat Ekonomi Negara (MPEN) sebelum diumumkan oleh Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak akhir Mac ini. MELAKA (Bernama) - The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) will consider requests to build a laboratory for inspection and certification of halal food products and herbs before being exported. Its deputy minister, Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir, said currently, exporters used the lab facilities in Singapore for certification before being exported, especially to the European Union (EU) countries. "The products that are verified and certified in Singapore will be easily accepted into the EU countries, although they actually originated from Malaysia," he told reporters after officiating at a meeting with entrepreneurs and exporters organised by Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) here on Thursday.

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - Any suggestion for beefing up the country's new economic model should be sent in as fast as possible to the National Economic Advisory Council (NEAC) before its announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak end of this March. Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said the government, through the NEAC, remained opened to feedback from all parties. "We are always open to receiving feedback from any party but we understand the Prime Minister will announce the new model at the end of next month," he said.
