Government To Address Concerns Over Influx Of Chinese Goods Into Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- The government is seeking the best solution to address the concerns of manufacturers over the sudden surge in the import of China-made products into Malaysia.

"We understand their concerns and are looking at how best to address it. But placing a cap may not be the best solution," International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir told reporters here Thursday.

He was commenting on a suggestion by the Associated Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) that Malaysia restrict the import of Chinese goods that were beginning to flood the market after the China-Asean Free Trade Agreement (FTA) became effective on Jan 1.

Mukhriz earlier witnessed the signing of a management and branding agreement between Ascenteus Holdings Sdn Bhd, Davanam Constructions Sdn Bhd and GHM Ltd.

ACCCIM President Tan Sri William Cheng said recently many manufacturers were struggling to survive after the influx of Chinese goods and recommended that representations be made to the Chinese Minister of Commerce to regulate the volume of exports.

He suggested that China increase its annual exports to Asean countries by only 10 per cent of its previous year's exports.
