KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Berjaya Corporation Bhd (BCorp), which plans to set up a car manufacturing plant in Malaysia is welcome to apply for manufacturing license for cars of 1.8 litres and above models, said Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.

BCorp and Chinese auto maker, BYD Co Ltd, recently signed a memorandum of understanding to develop BYD Auto's F0 right-hand drive one-litre model for the Malaysian and the Asean markets.

The Malaysian government lifted a freeze on car manufacturing licences for car models above 1.8 litres in the revised National Automotive Policy, announced at end of last year.

"The National Automotive Policy is very clear. As long as it is 1.8 litres and above, we will consider it positively and they can apply for the car that complies with the criteria," he told reporters here on Thursday.

He had earlier witnessed the signing of a management and branding agreement between Ascenteus Holdings Sdn Bhd, Davanam Constructions Sdn Bhd and GHM Ltd.

BCorp's executive director Datuk Francis Lee said recently that BCorp was "preparing to approach the Malaysian government to apply for the car manufacturing licence" and hoped the govenrment will be open to the idea.
